La Natura Machine
Avec la Natura Machine, nous proposons un dispositif olfactif, visuel, et cybernétique, avec la réappropriation d’une machine, un distributeur de boissons gazeuses, de ceux qui occupent nos espaces communs.
Recyclé et détourné, le distributeur automatique n'aura plus rien à vendre, juste à offrir sans contrepartie monétaire, dans des lieux de passages où il sera installé, un ticket de voyage qui le reconnecteras au végétal.
Chaque participants, intrigués par ce distributeur d'un autre type, recevra après avoir répondu à un bref questionnaire, un billet de voyage personnalisé avec deux échantillons d’eaux de plantes à pulvériser.
Ce projet est une collaboration avec la plasticienne EBG aka Emilie Benoist-Gironiere, et le Studio Paysan Parfumeur, une ferme associative néo-paysanne qui cultive les plantes mise à disposition dans la machine. Eric Roux Reiffsteck y occupe le métier de paysan et parfumeur, il est avec EBG, à l'origine de ce projet participatif. Beaucoup de ceux qui sont passé dans cette ferme, stagiaires d’école d’ingénieur agronome ou wwoofer se sont retrouvés à sourire, puis à réfléchir, à cette machine incongrue.
Avec un point commun, quel que soit les genres et les générations, celui d'être profondément préoccupés, par l’altération de notre habitat, coincé entre solastalgies et éco-anxiétés. Et reconnaissant l'urgence pour nous humain, à se reconnecter à la nature, à l’appréhender comme un tout.
La Natura Machine est une utopie végétale, un brin loufoque, avec l’envie sérieuse de nous extraire de la torpeur générée par une société humaine devenue bien trop anxiogène, en déconnexion avec son environnement. Elle offre une parenthèse légère et sensorielle aux passants, paradoxe d’une machine, automate et intelligente, devenue bienveillante à notre espèce et qui nous aiderai à retrouver le lien avec notre aire naturelle.
Une première esquisse du projet la Natura Machine a été présenté aux beaux-arts de Paris, l'ENSBA lors de la nuit des idées " Être vivant " en janvier 2020, puis à l'occasion de la carte blanche donnée à l'artiste EBG lors du « Jardin des délices » dans le cadre du Cercle Chromatique des Alumni, en mai 2021.
La Natura Machine est un distributeur automatique de boissons gazeuses qui aurait survécu à la tempête destructrice qui a touché la vallée de la Roya en octobre 2020, un territoire resté encore sauvage, peut-être l’un des plus riches de France par la diversité de son biotope végétal.
La machine aurait été emportée par cette tempête, bringuebalée dans le déchaînement du torrent. Bien qu'elle se soit abîmée, elle se tient encore debout, les pieds enfoncés dans le limon, au bord de la rivière. Mais elle a subi une hybridation pendant son périple.
Elle a absorbé et collecté une multitude d'éléments lors de sa descente dans les flots tumultueux. Des morceaux de plastique, des dérivés de polymères. Des câbles et autres résidus domestiques se sont enchevêtrés avec les branchages des végétaux partout dans la machine, brouillant la frontière entre les milieux humains, aquatiques et terrestres. Cette machine devenue amalgame, superpose comme une réalité augmentée, l'impact qu’ont nos résidus domestiques, lâchés en pleine nature par une tempête déchainée.
La Natura Machine aurait donc été retrouvée sur les bords de la rivière Roya fin octobre 2020. Passé à travers la tempête, elle n’a déjà plus l’aspect d’un simple distributeur de sodas. Elle va maintenant poursuivre sa métamorphose avec l’aide de la plasticienne EBG.
Depuis sa résidence de recherche à Breil-sur-Roya, EBG a imaginé le détournement artistique du distributeur automatique en l’affublant d'une nouvelle coque et d’un tout nouveau câble d'alimentation, en perspective de sa transformation, en Natura Machine.
Recréant des formes sculpturales qui s’échouent dans les espaces, EBG prolonge ici son travail débuté en 2021, avec sa série Futurs Fossils. Cette machine est un témoin, à l’allure de relique, composée d’amalgames de multiples échantillons du moment, qui la feront elle aussi, un futur fossile.
EBG a rhabillé le distributeur automatique avec un ensemble de plastigomerates, agglomérés de plastiques, liés avec un peu de sédiments naturels et beaucoup d'artificiels prélevés et récolté sur les bords de la Roya, quelques temps après la tempête. La Natura Machine fait figure d’écosystème à elle toute seule, où s'entremêlent un formidable brouillage des éléments de vies organiques, domestiques et industrielles.
Cette nouvelle coque s'assemblera autour de son squelette de distributeur de boisson, qui sera adapté pour l'occasion à distribuer des échantillons d’eaux florales. La coque pourra se retirer lors de ses déplacements, la Natura Machine pourra ainsi retrouver ses congénères, distributeurs automatiques de boisson et de snack. Elle le fera lors d’apparitions éphémères, installées dans des lieux de passage, halls de gare, station de métro, cafétérias, festivals, jusqu’aux halls d’entrée des musées et des centres culturels.
Avec son apparence particulière, affublée de cette nouvelle coque géante et sa forme de galet faite de ces polystyrènes expansés, retrouvé le long de la rivière, amalgamés, polis puis repeint en couleurs pastel, la Natura Machine attirera définitivement le regard et la curiosité des passants. De tous âges, ils viendront interagir avec cette machine d’un autre âge.
Intrigué, on s'approchera de l'écran tactile de la tablette de la machine, et en échange de quelques informations, le voyage de reconnexion à la nature pourra commencer. Pour l'élaboration de son trajet, le voyageur aura à sélectionner parmi une galerie de mots clefs proposés (tags) qui lui attribuera un couple de plantes et un billet de voyage personnalisé.
Nous utiliserons une méthode de tags, mots à sélectionner visant à comprendre dans quel état émotionnel se trouve le voyageur pour lui proposer une expérience personnalisée avec un choix de plantes qui l’aideront à équilibrer son état émotionnel.
Il aura à choisir parmi deux groups de mots qu’il aura juste à sélectionner. Voici un aperçu des deux listes de tags qui lui seront proposées :

Une fois les données enregistrées, une petite bande sonore s’enclenchera. Le son que fait la canette qui tombe et cogne sur les parties métalliques de la machine pour arriver dans son tiroir de distribution. La fin de la lecture de la bande son coïncidera avec l’arrivé des deux petites fioles d’échantillons de spray d'eau de plante avec un message d’alerte simultanée, sur le téléphone du voyageur, lui signalant l’arrivé de son ticket de voyage dématérialisé dans sa boite mail.
Pas de sodas, ni de snack, cette fois avec cet automate, juste un peu d’eau de plantes à pschitter dans l'atmosphère pour un bol d'air de fragrances végétales.
La machine propose deux plantes récoltées par nos soins et distillées sous forme d’eau florale. Ces deux extraits d'eau de plantes, appelés hydrolats, forment alors un premier accord, point d'entrée olfactif au voyage d'une reconnection à notre milieu naturel. Il y aura 45 combinaisons possibles avec une dizaine de plantes mises à disposition.
Les fragrances fonctionnent comme des notes de musiques, elles s’assemblent en accord. Sans préjugé de l’harmonie olfactive, toujours subjective, de l’association des deux plantes, le voyageur retrouveras l’essentiel, celui de s’accorder un moment pour entrer en vibration avec le végétal. Et tout ça dans des circonstances et un lieu de passage, une gare ou une station de métro par exemple, qui à priori ne s’y prêtaient pas.
Les plantes ont été sélectionnés pour leur disposition à soigner et par leur disponibilité dans notre biotope méditerranéen. Nous les cultivons ou les récoltons à l'état sauvage. Il s’agit des dix plantes suivantes :

L’eau florale ou hydrolat est le résultat de la distillation à la vapeur d’eau avec un alambic. Une opération que nous menons après la récolte des plantes où nous récupérons d’une part, une eau distillée, l’hydrolat, et d’autre part une huile, l’huile essentielle, en plus petite quantité.
Le terme hydrolat est plus approprié que celui d'"eau florale" car il est obtenu non seulement à partir de fleurs mais aussi de racines, graines ou feuilles lors de la distillation. Les hydrolats font partie de l'hydrolathérapie, une branche de la phytothérapie.
L'utilisation d'hydrolats est importante pour notre projet car c'est un sous-produit de la distillation disponible en quantité relativement importante avec un impact limité sur l'environnement. Auparavant, il était souvent jeté sans être valorisé. Les hydrolats ont également une valeur olfactive intéressante, car même s'ils sont peu concentrés, ils conservent une puissance olfactive agréable lorsqu'ils sont diffusés.
Les fragrances se connectent directement au système limbique de notre cerveau, le centre des émotions, de la mémoire, de la motivation et de l'apprentissage. En nous enveloppant de leurs parfums, les plantes nous plongent dans un état de conscience particulier. Où par le souffle de nos respirations, nous ne faisons plus qu’un avec l’environnement, prêt à mieux ressentir, ces êtres non-humains, les végétaux en particulier, avec lesquels nous partageons cette terre.
En des deux échantillons d'hydrolat, le voyageur recevra son billet de transport dématérialisé dans sa boîte mail ou par SMS, selon les coordonnées qu'il aura préalablement transmises.
EBG ne s'est pas arrêtée à la réappropriation plastique de la machine. Elle a créé une série de dix dessins originaux appelés "diagrammes végétaux". Ce sont des illustrations botaniques de l’artiste, inspirées par les plantes sélectionnées et présentes sur la ferme, qu’elle a eu le temps d’approcher, de toucher et de sentir lors de sa résidence.
La face verso de chaque ticket sera illustrée par un fragment unique et numéroté d’un de ses dix dessins qui auront été parcellisé.
Au terme du voyage, tous les participants pourront venir se connecter sur le site web de la machine. Chacun apportant son fragment, reconstituant ainsi l’unité du dessin, à la façon d’un puzzle, avant qu’il n’ait été morcelé et parcellisé en plusieurs parties pour entrer dans la machine.
Cette ultime expérience de mise en commun, donnera au voyageur la sensation de faire partie intégrante d’un tout, non seulement d'un point de vue olfactif avec les plantes, mais aussi visuel en venant compléter avec son ticket personnalisé, un dessin commun, pour ne pas dire un destin commun pour retrouver l’unité.

Le choix du distributeur automatique n'est pas anodin. Standardisé à l'extrême, il caractérise une économie prédatrice propriété de multinationales agroalimentaires. Le distributeur automatique propose des produits à très faible valeur nutritive et contribue à éloigner l’humain de son humanité. Il n’y a plus de vendeur, ni de nature, ou seulement des ersatz, des produits proposés étant extrêmement transformés et industrialisés.
Dès l’origine, il était question d’adjoindre à notre Natura Machine, de l’intelligence artificielle. L’automate est une machine emblématique car il remplace l’humain dans ses taches physiques alors que l’intelligence artificielle le remplace dans ces taches intellectuelles. Nous voulions que la Natura Machine rassemble en son sein, deux de ces outils des plus emblématiques pour questionner notre devenir.
Avec les derniers progrès spectaculaires de l’Intelligence Artificielle générative et sa mise à disposition aux développeurs informatiques, puis au grand public fin 2022 ont fait que notre Natura Machine à fait un bond.
La voilà capable maintenant, en lui rattachant un protocole conversationnelle informatique (API) a même de nous écrire quelques mots, sous forme d’haiku, ces courts poèmes japonais que nous imprimerons au verso des billets.
Nous avons demandé à l’entreprise Open AI et son chat GPT de faire partie des bêta-testeurs de la dernière version de leur API. Cette application qui permet un protocole d’échange entre leur programme et notre machine.
Voici quelques exemples de suite de mots qui feront le prompt, l’invite de commande de la machine. Il est constitué des tags choisis par le participant, associé aux deux plantes qui lui sont conseillés :

Nous voilà donc avec ces quelques poèmes soufflés par la machine, imprimés au verso du billet, qui seront reçu en guise de bienvenue, et inspirons le voyageur tout au long de cette expérience.
Il y a des sites spécialisés où l’on trouve de vieux distributeur de sodas mise au rebus. Nous le choisirons un peu vintage pour lui garder son apparence d’automate low-tech. Il n'y aura pas de grosse ingénierie à modifier à l’intérieur de son système de distribution. A la place de canettes, il distribuera seulement les petits flacons, échantillons de spray.
Son aspect extérieur a lui changé par le travail d’Emilie comme expliqué précédemment, en lui adjoignant cette coque et son câble, ainsi qu’une tablette qui servira d’interface. C’est sur cette dernière que tournera notre application qui guidera le voyageur dans ces quelques étapes.
Les participants sont tenus informés qu’aucune de leurs données personnelles ne sera utilisée en dehors de cette expérience. Rien d'autre qu'un courriel à communiquer pour recevoir sur sa boîte mail son ticket. Le programme qui fera tourner l'application sera en open source, ouvert à tous les voyageurs qui voudraient y participer pour l'améliorer.
Pour les étapes techniques et informatiques, nous nous rapprocherons du tiers lieu Sainte Marthe à Grasse. C'est dans l'atelier de sa fabrique numérique, son CentifoLab, espaces de médiation et d'innovation, que nous allons monter la Natura Machine.
Grasse est un territoire emblématique pour le projet. Historiquement, les paysans de la Vallée de la Roya étaient d'importants pourvoyeurs de plantes pour cette capitale du parfum. Ils allaient porter jusqu'aux usines les plantes qu'ils cultivaient ou récoltaient en sauvage, telles que la lavande et la sarriette. Que la Natura Machine prenne vie dans les ateliers du tiers lieu Sainte Marthe à Grasse, ville des parfums, c'est plutôt de bon augure pour une machine olfactive.
La Natura Machine pose, le temps d’un sourire, et d’une inhalation bienveillante, la question de notre relation avec la nature mais aussi celui de l’environnement technologique.
La Natura Machine part du végétal pour toucher avec le sens olfactif, le cerveau limbique, lieu de l’émotionnel humain qui ouvre les portes d’une reconnexion à notre biotope naturel. Et surprise, c’est une machine, automate agrémenté d’intelligence artificielle, qui s’en charge.
La machine a toujours soulevé des interrogations et la venue de l’intelligence artificielle en soulève encore de bien plus profondes. Allons-nous nous hybrider en mêlant l’artificiel et le naturel, au point de ne plus pouvoir les séparer, tellement ils se sont interpénétrés ? A l’image de ces inextricables artefacts de notre présence, de nos plastiques, de nos productions industrielles qui se sont infiltré au plus profond des territoires naturels comme le suggère une partie de l’œuvre plastique d’EBG.
L’ère anthropocène n’est peut-être que le départ d’une hybridation qui va en s’accélérant. Après tout, les machines ne sortent pas de nulle part, elles ne sont pas extraterrestres, bien au contraire ses composants les plus essentiels, comme le silicium, sont issus du minéral, extrait du sous-sol de la terre. L’IA peut être vue comme une collaboration humaine avec le minéral, où l’impulsion informatique, créer par l’humain passe à travers le minéral du silicium.
Unis par l’urgence pour nous sortir de l’écueil où nous nous sommes fourvoyés, en détruisant par nos activités outrancières l’espace vital commun à tous les cohabitants, humains et non humain. La Natura Machine fait peut-être partie des prémices d’une future collaboration entre les règnes végétal, minéral, incarné par l’intelligence artificielle, et l’animal humain, réunis ici devant l’urgence du désastre.
A nous de bien réfléchir, si nous voulons de cette greffe qui est en train de prendre à grande vitesse sur la souche humaine, et qui pourrais, à la condition de rester libre et bienveillante, nous sortir du marasme en nous préparant à construire l’après tempête qui nous attend.

With La Natura Machine, we propose an olfactory, visual, and cybernetic device, created by repurposing a machine, a soda dispenser, like those found in our communal spaces.
Recycled and repurposed, the vending machine will have nothing to sell, only to offer without monetary compensation, in high-traffic areas where it will be installed, a travel ticket reconnecting people with the plant world.
Each participant, intrigued by this unusual dispenser, will receive a personalized travel ticket with two plant water samples to spray, after answering a brief questionnaire.
This project is a collaboration with visual artist EBG, aka Emilie Benoist-Gironiere, and the Peasant Perfumer Studio, a neo-peasant associative farm that cultivates the plants available in the machine. Eric Roux Reiffsteck works as a peasant and perfumer there and, together with EBG, originated this participatory project. Many people who have passed through this farm, whether agricultural engineering interns or Wwoofers, have found themselves smiling, then reflecting on this incongruous machine.
With one thing in common, regardless of gender and generations, they are all deeply concerned about the deterioration of our habitat, caught between solastalgia and eco-anxiety. They recognize the urgency for humans to reconnect with nature and understand it as a whole.
La Natura Machine is a plant-based utopia, slightly quirky, with a serious desire to extract us from the lethargy generated by an increasingly anxiety-provoking human society disconnected from its environment. It offers a light and sensory break for passers-by, a paradox of a machine, automatic and intelligent, which has become benevolent to our species and helps us reconnect with our natural surroundings.

The machine would have been swept away by the storm, battered in the torrent's fury. Although damaged, it still stands, its feet sunk into the silt on the riverbank. But it underwent hybridization during its journey.
It absorbed and collected a multitude of elements as it descended the turbulent waters. Pieces of plastic, polymer derivatives, cables, and other household waste became entangled with the branches of plants throughout the machine, blurring the boundary between human, aquatic, and terrestrial environments. This machine-turned-amalgam superimposes, like an augmented reality, the impact our domestic waste has when released into the wild by an unleashed storm.

From her research residency in Breil-sur-Roya, EBG envisioned an artistic repurposing of the vending machine by outfitting it with a new shell and a brand-new power cable, as part of its transformation into the Natura Machine.
Creating sculptural forms that wash up in spaces, EBG extends her work that began in 2021 with her Futurs Fossils series. This machine is a relic-like witness, composed of amalgams of multiple samples from the present moment, which will also make it a future fossil.
EBG dressed the vending machine in a set of plastigomerates, aggregates of plastics, bound with some natural and a lot of artificial sediments collected from the banks of the Roya, some time after the storm. The Natura Machine serves as an ecosystem in itself, where a fantastic mix of organic, domestic, and industrial life elements intertwine.
This new shell will assemble around the drink dispenser skeleton, which will be adapted for the occasion to dispense floral water samples. The shell can be removed during transport, allowing the Natura Machine to join its fellow vending machines for drinks and snacks. It will make ephemeral appearances in transit areas, train station halls, subway stations, cafeterias, festivals, and museum and cultural center entrances.
With its distinctive appearance, adorned with this new giant shell and its pebble shape made of expanded polystyrene found along the river, amalgamated, polished, and repainted in pastel colors, the Natura Machine will undoubtedly attract the attention and curiosity of passers-by of all ages. They will come to interact with this machine from another era.
Intrigued, one will approach the machine's touchscreen tablet, and in exchange for some information, the journey of reconnection to nature can begin. To plan their route, the traveler will have to select from a gallery of suggested keywords (tags) that will assign them a pair of plants and a personalized travel ticket.

Once the data is recorded, a short soundtrack will start. The sound of the can falling and hitting the metallic parts of the machine to reach its dispensing drawer. The end of the soundtrack will coincide with the arrival of the two small vials of plant water spray samples and a simultaneous alert message on the traveler's phone, notifying them of the arrival of their dematerialized travel ticket in their inbox.

Fragrances work like musical notes; they assemble in harmony. Without prejudice to the olfactory harmony, always subjective, of the association of the two plants, the traveler will find the essential: to take a moment to enter into vibration with the plant world. And all this in circumstances and a place of passage, a train station or a subway station, for example, which at first glance did not lend themselves to it.
The plants have been selected for their ability to heal and their availability in our Mediterranean biotope. We cultivate or harvest them in the wild. The following ten plants are involved:

About Hydrosol
Floral water or hydrosol is the result of steam distillation with an alembic. An operation we carry out after harvesting plants, where we recover, on one hand, distilled water, the hydrosol, and on the other hand, an oil, the essential oil, in a smaller quantity.

The term hydrosol is more appropriate than "floral water" because it is obtained not only from flowers but also from roots, seeds, or leaves during distillation. Hydrosols are part of hydrolatherapy, a branch of phytotherapy.
The use of hydrosols is important for our project because it is a by-product of distillation available in a relatively large quantity with limited environmental impact. In the past, it was often discarded without being valued. Hydrosols also have an interesting olfactory value, as even though they are less concentrated, they retain a pleasant olfactory potency when diffused.
Fragrances connect directly to our brain's limbic system, the center of emotions, memory, motivation, and learning. By enveloping us in their scents, plants immerse us in a particular state of consciousness. Where, with the breath of our breathing, we become one with the environment, ready to better feel these non-human beings, plants in particular, with whom we share this earth.
A Sweet Ticket
Along with the two hydrosol samples, the traveler will receive their digital transport ticket in their email inbox or by SMS, depending on the contact information they provided beforehand.

EBG didn't stop at the machine's plastic makeover. They created a series of ten original drawings called "plant diagrams." These are botanical illustrations by the artist, inspired by the plants selected and present on the farm, which they had the opportunity to approach, touch, and smell during their residency.

The back of each ticket will be illustrated with a unique, numbered fragment from one of these ten drawings, which will have been divided into parts. At the end of the journey, all participants will be able to connect to the machine's website. Each person, bringing their fragment, will reassemble the drawing's unity, like a puzzle, before it was divided and parceled into several parts to enter the machine.
This ultimate shared experience will give the traveler the sensation of being an integral part of a whole, not only from an olfactory perspective with the plants but also visually by completing a common drawing with their personalized ticket, not to mention a common destiny to regain unity.

From the outset, we intended to add artificial intelligence to our Natura Machine. The vending machine is an emblematic machine because it replaces humans in physical tasks, while artificial intelligence replaces them in intellectual tasks. We wanted the Natura Machine to bring together two of the most emblematic tools to question our future.
With the latest spectacular advances in generative Artificial Intelligence and its availability to software developers and then the general public by the end of 2022, our Natura Machine has taken a leap forward.
Now it's capable, by connecting it to a conversational software protocol (API), of writing a few words for us in the form of haikus, those short Japanese poems that we will print on the back of the tickets. We asked the company Open AI and its GPT chatbot to be part of the beta testers for the latest version of their API. This application allows an exchange protocol between their program and our machine.

Manufacturing, Engineering
There are specialized sites where you can find old, discarded soda vending machines. We'll choose a slightly vintage one to keep its low-tech automaton appearance. There won't be significant engineering modifications to its distribution system. Instead of cans, it will only distribute small sample spray bottles.

Its exterior appearance has been changed by Emilie's work, as explained earlier, by adding a shell, a cable, and a tablet that will serve as an interface. Our application, which will guide the traveler through these steps, will run on this tablet.
Participants are informed that none of their personal data will be used outside of this experience. Nothing more than an email is needed to receive their ticket in their inbox. The program that will run the application will be open-source, accessible to all travelers who want to participate in improving it.
For the technical and IT steps, we will collaborate with the Sainte Marthe third place in Grasse. It is in the workshop of its digital factory, the CentifoLab, spaces for mediation and innovation, that we will set up the Natura Machine.
Grasse is an emblematic territory for the project. Historically, the peasants of the Roya Valley were significant suppliers of plants for this perfume capital. They would bring the plants they cultivated or harvested from the wild, such as lavender and savory, to the factories. The fact that the Natura Machine comes to life in the workshops of the Sainte Marthe third place in Grasse, the city of perfumes, is a good omen for an olfactory machine.

The Natura Machine starts with plants to engage the sense of smell, the limbic brain, the seat of human emotions that opens the doors to reconnection with our natural biotope. Surprisingly, it is a machine, an automaton enhanced with artificial intelligence, that takes on this task.
Machines have always raised questions, and the advent of artificial intelligence raises even deeper ones. Will we hybridize by mixing the artificial and the natural, to the point of being unable to separate them, as they have become so intertwined? This is reminiscent of the inextricable artifacts of our presence, our plastics, and our industrial productions that have infiltrated the depths of natural territories, as suggested by part of EBG's artistic work.
The Anthropocene era may be just the beginning of an accelerating hybridization process. After all, machines do not come from nowhere; they are not extraterrestrial. On the contrary, their most essential components, such as silicon, come from minerals extracted from the Earth's crust. AI can be seen as a human collaboration with minerals, where the digital impulse, created by humans, passes through the mineral silicon.
United by the urgency to save ourselves from the predicament we have brought upon ourselves, destroying the vital space shared by all inhabitants, human and non-human, through our excessive activities. The Natura Machine may be part of the early signs of a future collaboration between the plant, mineral, embodied by artificial intelligence, and human animal realms, united here by the urgency of disaster.
It is up to us to think carefully about whether we want this graft, which is taking hold at high speed on the human stock, and which could, on the condition of remaining free and benevolent, pull us out of the quagmire and prepare us to build the post-storm future that awaits us.
